Needs a few little things but overall excellent condition, pretty much exactly as described and expected. The dealer even went out of their way to track down the previous owner and get service records! Leaving SLC in a minute. Thanks to alfalfa for picking me up. We met up with oppo noon Lossy for lunch.
Wish me luck for the snowy roads back to the PNW!

NOICE. Congrats!
Right after we bought the ML, one of my mom’s friends bought a 2002 E55 AMG, in silver too, as a family car. MSRP was $70,000, if I recall correctly. Long story short, it was totaled by her husband in 2010. rip.

Congrats man! Love these cars. I’ve heard that the engine in the E55 is pretty solid. I hope that’s true, because I want to pick one up one day. Love the monoblocks btw. Any planned mods?

I drove that car. It makes some nice vroom noises.

First time seeing one of that generation. It very nice and I’m very jelly. Enjoy yourself.

Thanks!
Sounds about right. Too bad they wrecked it though.

I will thank you. No supercharger on these old ones though. Much more reliable, much less tech.

Nope. Facelifted W210. Maybe you’re thinking w211?

Yaaayyyyy! Have a fun trip back!

Thanks! And yeah, they are excellent engines, rarely have anything worse than minor issues like valve cover gaskets or water pumps, etc.
Fix the few minor issues it has then planning on Koni adjustable shocks, maybe lower it, then cut out the secondary cats and resonator and install an x-pipe. The exhaust mods should free a little bit of weight and open up a couple ponies and decibels.

Yeah, her husband bought a C5 (back when it was new) and totaled it on the way home... *facepalm*

Niiiiice! Fast version of a true tank ! Want to swap wheels with my black W210? My 16's would look way better on that AMG....errr....yeah :] lol

Seems heavy.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 16:28 |

W210s are solid cars. I drove an E300 Turbodiesel for a while, until I spun it on I-75 and totalled it.
I walked away without injury. Then I bought a Mini. Maybe when I’m done with the Mini, I’ll be back to a W210 or W211.

I’m sorry but they are truly dreadful. Just slabs of metal with lug holes drilled in them. Steelies look better

Monoblocs look better than some steelies, and just as good as others.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 17:35 |
|
Now that’s a proper car.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 17:39 |

See your steelies I like. Same with the gen5 camaro steelies and the cop Tahoe steelies. The monoblocks just don’t do anything for me. Maybe if they were black or even gunmetal but they are just to plain in the standard silver
![]() 01/16/2016 at 17:53 |
|
This just looks wrong to me
![]() 01/16/2016 at 18:20 |

See those I like lol
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:31 |

Tempting. Very tempting. It would really be a sleeper then! Actually I now have two sets of 18" monoblocks. Recently acquired a “free” set through work that someone left unclaimed in the basement for the last 15 years (brand new take offs!), the shop sort of raffled those and a few other things off.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:32 |
|
Agreed. The black masks their awesomeness.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:43 |
|
Replied. Oh, and I forgot. Have the dealer (or get me the VIN) check to see if the engine number is in the balance shaft/idler sprocket failure range. Those are expensive.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:44 |
|
I’m hoping I don’t spin this one on I-84 tomorrow!
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:45 |

Thanks!
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:46 |

That is the plan. Also Koni’s and maybe lowering springs. Undecided on the springs currently. Just going to fix a couple of minor issues first.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:47 |
|
Yeah, definitely trying not to. Just made it to my hotel room in Boise. That’s almost half the battle!
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:51 |
|
You shouldn’t have to worry too much about it. I slid across six lanes of traffic to the outside guard rail going backwards at 70 MPH. At least I only rotated 180 degrees, and stopped the rotation.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:54 |
|
I wouldnt lower it, theres where CVs and ball joints start to bite the dust.
It has a useful and pretty good ride height I think.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:55 |
|
Well... Summer tires, RWD, 350hp, and snowy mountain passes disagree with you
![]() 01/16/2016 at 20:58 |
|
The rear axles aren’t problematic and it already needs front lower ball joints. I’m leaning towards not doing the springs. If I could readily get some springs with a higher rate and maybe .5" lower ride height it it would be perfect. I mostly just want it to be slightly less cushy.
![]() 01/16/2016 at 21:05 |
|
Half inch isnt bad, I could agree with that.
Nothing from H&R or KYB?
![]() 01/16/2016 at 21:10 |
|
The smallest drop I could find were the H&R springs at 1.2-1.3". But now that we’re talking about I’m thinking maybe just get the thinnest factory ride height shims available since they normally come with a middle-thickness shim on every corner.

Good times. Any snow on the way back?
![]() 01/16/2016 at 22:08 |

Hey it’s like a bigger version of my car, and an actual AMG.
Congratulations man!
![]() 01/16/2016 at 22:11 |
|
Yeah, for a little over an hour right out of salt lake. Then it was raining for a while, then dry. The roads were mostly just wet when it was snowing though so no big deal.

I’m not looking to buy right at this moment so this one will be long gone before I get to it but for real thanks for the great input.
![]() 01/17/2016 at 01:30 |

Cool. When/if you do look at getting one I suggest an ‘08 or newer to avoid the sprocket issue, as well as a few other minor things (they just continually improve them in production).

|
TriCities Oppo says congrats!

great to know thanks. There was an ‘09 I was eyeballing too with 62,000 miles.

I had all seasons, 177 theoretical horsepower and rain. :)
![]() 01/17/2016 at 12:39 |
|
I imagine that would be an excellent choice. But of course check the carfax and get a pre-purchase inspection. Even I got a PPI for my new E55 since it was too far away for me to do it myself.
![]() 01/17/2016 at 12:47 |
|
I’m jealous of that combination right now. Waze isn’t reporting any issues but trip check is telling me the road is icy...
![]() 01/17/2016 at 12:57 |
|
What would be less perilous: Driving an E55 AMG with summer tires on ice, or driving a UHaul with a UHaul car carrier on the back loaded with an E55 AMG on ice?
#ImportantQuestions
![]() 01/17/2016 at 13:21 |

I don’t even want to think about trying a trailer in this. I don’t trust my tuck/trailer skills enough. But I drive AMG’s in cheap weather all the time and grew up broke with bald tires on everything in minneSNOWta. I’m hedging my bets on the old girl and I’m going to go super slow if things don’t look good. If I get too nervous I’ll just stop.
![]() 01/17/2016 at 15:00 |
|
Which is the better car reliability wise? S450 or S550? or the common problems are not related to the motor at all(except early sprocket issues)?
![]() 01/17/2016 at 15:16 |
|
Honestly, I’d rather tow a trailer so long as I’m not going downhill in weather like that. That way, if you stop making forward progress, it’s a good indication you are in over your head.
![]() 01/17/2016 at 17:05 |
|
I would imagine they’re about the same. We don’t get the S450 here but it should be just a lower displacement version of the same engine. Maybe a few less options.
![]() 01/17/2016 at 17:07 |
|
That’s the problem, a lot of it is downhill. But I’m halfway through the bad stretch and so far so good!
Edit: no I’m not driving and typing, just taking a short break.
